Local schools compete in Eighth Annual Black History Bowl at APSU

            CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Earlier this month, dozens of middle and high school students stopped by the Austin Peay State University campus to participate in the Eighth Annual Black History Bowl.

            CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Earlier this month, dozens of middle and high school students stopped by the Austin Peay State University campus to participate in the Eighth Annual Black History Bowl.

            鈥淲e had a good attendance with three middle school teams competing against each other and three high school teams competing against each other,鈥 Dr. Barbara Peterson, APSU associate professor of education, said. 鈥淭here was a heightened level of excitement and anticipation for this year鈥檚 event.鈥

            The APSU Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA) hosted the scholastic event, which had teams facing off in a 鈥淛eopardy鈥-style competition. Players from each school were required to answer questions on several different topics pertaining to black history.

            The participating schools, and how they placed in the event, include:

            鈥 Northwest High School 鈥 first place

            鈥 Kenwood High School 鈥 second place

            鈥 Clarksville High School 鈥 third place

            鈥 Rossview Middle School 鈥 first place (middle school competition)

            鈥 Northeast Middle School 鈥 second place

            鈥 New Providence Middle School 鈥 third place.

            The STEA club partnered with APSU鈥檚 Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural Center, the APSU ROTC program and the College of Education鈥檚 Project MORE Scholars to host the event. Peterson said they鈥檙e already planning the Ninth Annual Black History Bowl, which is tentatively set for Jan. 31, 2014.
