APSU Department of Theatre and Dance looking to reconnect with community with "Nunsense"

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. 鈥 Brian Vernon, chair of the Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance, looked a bit tired the other day as he sat in his office.

鈥淲e鈥檝e got five nuns learning a tap routine right now,鈥 he said, suppressing a yawn.

The nuns in question are actually APSU students preparing for the department鈥檚 upcoming performance of the wildly popular musical comedy, 鈥淣unsense.鈥 Vernon is directing and choreographing the famed play about a group of nuns in the south of France who discover the cook has accidentally poisoned 52 other residents of the convent.

鈥淚t鈥檚 fun, and it鈥檚 going to be a really entertaining evening,鈥 Vernon said. 鈥淎nd I thought it was something that could challenge our students, while allowing them the opportunity to excel.鈥

鈥淣unsense鈥 will open at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the Trahern Theater. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14-16 and Nov. 21-23, and 2 p.m. on Nov. 17 and Nov. 24.

鈥淭he excitement of live theater always trumps movies,鈥 Vernon said. 鈥淪omething new happens at rehearsal every night. One might call them mishaps. You might call them challenges. But to see the actresses deal with it and grow with it is amazing. And there鈥檚 also nothing like seeing live song and dance.鈥

鈥淣unsense鈥 was a major hit when it premiered on Broadway in 1985. Vernon hopes the popular musical will reconnect his department with the local community. He鈥檚 hoping to see some new and familiar faces during a special event on opening night.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a special night,鈥 he said. 鈥(APSU) President Tim Hall and other VIPs will be there. We鈥檙e not asking for money. We just want to give them a good show to reconnect with our department. And there鈥檚 going to be a reception with heavy hors d鈥檕euvres afterwards, and a meet-and-greet with the cast.鈥

The cast for  鈥淣unsense鈥 includes APSU students Becky Bagley, Kaitlynn Weller, Maggie Jackson, Jamila Hunter and Kaitlyn Williams.
