Praised for his "unusually ethereal and powerful voice," countertenor Dr. Min Sang Kim has captivated audiences worldwide with his exceptional artistry and versatility. His extensive operatic repertoire includes leading roles such as Giulio Cesare and Tolomeo in Handel's Giulio Cesare; Nerone in Handel's Agrippina; Rinaldo in Handel's Rinaldo; Oberon in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream; Ottone, Nerone, and Valetto in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea; Endimione in Cavalli's La Calisto; Orfeo in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice; Madame de la Haltière in Massenet's Cendrillon; Prince Orlofsky in Strauss's Die Fledermaus; Secrecy and Mopsa in Purcell's The Fairy Queen; Sorceress in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas; Apollo in Cavalli's L'Egisto; Ixion in Charpentier's La descente d'Orphée aux enfers; and Ascanio in Mozart's Ascanio in Alba. Most recently, he originated the role of the Witchfinder in Ashi Day's Waking the Witch, performed in both the United States and Canada. The work was supported by OPERA America's Discovery Grants and the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.
A seasoned performer, he has collaborated with acclaimed ensembles and orchestras including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Washington Bach Consort, Dolce Contento Ensemble, American Bach Soloists, Gateway Chamber Orchestra, Concert Chorale of Nashville, Washington National Cathedral Choir, Washington Concert Society, and Daegu Orchestra. He has frequently appeared in distinguished venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Strathmore, Symphony Hall, Daegu Concert House, and Seoul Arts Center.
Dr. Kim is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including top prizes in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Capitol District), Annapolis Opera Competition, Camille Coloratura Awards, Saltworks Opera Competition, Concert Artists International Music Competition, Russell C. Wonderlic Voice Competition, Baltimore Music Club Competition, Music Association of Daegu National Competition, and Osaka International Music Competition. He was also a finalist in the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition and the Vocal Arts DC Competition. In recognition of his artistic excellence and service to immigrant communities, he was awarded an Official Citation from the Maryland Legislative Asian-American and Pacific-Islander Caucus.
A native of South Korea, he began his formal studies at The Juilliard School's Pre-College, then earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. He completed both his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Voice at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, becoming the first countertenor in the school's history to earn a DMA. His academic work was supported by the George Woodhead Quasi-Endowed Scholarship and the G. Raymond Ziegler Endowed Scholarship.
Dr. Kim currently serves as Assistant Professor of Voice at Austin Peay State University. Prior to joining APSU, he taught at Northern Virginia Community College and the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University. His students have received numerous awards, scholarships, and grants, and have been admitted to prestigious programs, including the New England Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University, University of Michigan, Boston Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, New York University, and Circle in the Square Theatre School.
