John Paul Powers is a native of Clinton, Tennessee and is currently Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Austin Peay State University. Previously, he was Associate Instructor of Tuba at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Music degree in Tuba Performance with a minor in Music Education.

At Tennessee Tech University, John was a member of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, the first and most recorded ensemble of its kind. He performed with the ensemble at Carnegie Hall in 2014. John has achieved numerous distinctions in his performance career, including winning the 2016 Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition. He was the principal tuba in Carnegie Hall's 2013 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Under the direction of Maestro Valery Gergiev, the orchestra performed in New York, Washington, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and the BBC Proms in London.

John was second place in the Leonard Falcone and International Tuba Euphonium Conference (ITEC) Young Artist competitions in 2014. He was first runner up overall and wind division winner in the Nashville Symphony Curb Records Concerto Competition in 2013. He was also a semi-finalist in the ITEC solo competition in Linz, Austria.
