APSU’s Lavelle reaches round of 32 at World University Games

Austin Peay biology student Brinna Lavelle reached the round of 32 in judo for Team USA over the weekend at the World University Games in Naples, Italy.
Lavelle lost to Chile's Nicole Vera on July 6 in the 52-kilogram weight class.
Lavelle also participated in the team competition on July 7. Team USA beat India in the round of 32 before losing to Russia in the round of 16. Russia ultimately won the silver medal, losing to Japan.
This was Lavelle's first worldwide competition. She earned a bronze medal in last year's American Games, which included competitors from North, Central and South America.
The World University Games are the second-largest multisport event in the world after the summer Olympics. More than 9,000 athletes from across the world compete.
The World University Games continue through July 14.
