Local artist's portrait project, Women of Clarksville, celebrates local women

Women’s History Month, a month set aside each year to highlight the contributions of women in history and contemporary society, will be celebrated a bit differently this March in Clarksville. Women of Clarksville, a community-powered portrait project, will launch March 4 in Downtown Clarksville, highlighting 16 local women who work each day to improve Clarksville within their sphere of influence. “In a time where our social and political landscape feels very divisive, I felt inspired to create something within my own sphere of influence that could inspire unity,” Brittany Bowen, project creator, said. Bowen moved to Clarksville in 2019 and immediately immersed herself in the local arts scene. She has a degree in photography and teaches art classes for the Austin Peay State University Community School for the Arts. The women featured in the exhibit work in various fields such as education, local government, business, nonprofit, medical, law enforcement, health/wellness, religion, the arts and entertainment. “Each of the women in this series comes from a very different professional, socio-economic, political, religious, ethnic, social and cultural background, yet are united in their desire to lift up our town,” Bowen said. “To me that’s what makes a community such a beautiful thing. We are all so different and similar at the same time.” The project will be exhibited in various storefronts along Franklin Street, Strawberry Alley and Second Street during March. “I hope that by seeing the good in these women, you will be inspired to see the good in yourself and spread that goodness in your own way,” Bowen said. All 17 GOVing Tuesday fundable projects were fully funded by the close of the campaign on Dec. 2--with an additional $12,000 raised beyond the goal to support Funds of Excellence across participating areas. In total, the campaign raised $75,670.36--the highest dollar amount and the greatest number of gifts in GOVing Tuesday history.
