APSU and CMCSS receive a $30,000 grant from The Japan Foundation
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Consul-General of Japan, presented Alisa White, Austin Peay State University president, and Millard L. House II, director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS), with a $30,000 grant to support the institutions’ innovative Japanese language partnership during a gathering at President White’s home last week.
APSU and CMCSS launched the major partnership in 2018 to become the state’s first public education institutions to offer both Japanese and Korean language courses to students. The new classes, funded by grants from The Japan Foundation and the ALLEX Foundation, were developed to better serve the Japanese- and Korean-owned businesses investing in this region.
“Whenever I have an opportunity to say a few words in Tennessee, I like to speak about the strong relationship between the state and Japan,” Kobayashi stated. “Thanks to the support of community leaders, the number of Japanese companies in Tennessee has grown to 200.”
CMCSS and APSU will use this grant to continue supporting the Japanese language partnership. Currently, the two institutions share an instructor, Dr. Mitsutoshi Inaba, who spends 60 percent of his time at APSU and 40 percent of his time at Clarksville High’s Academy of Business and Finance.
“Each year Japan funds assistance grants to support Japanese language programs through the Japan Foundation,” Kobayashi said. “I am pleased to present this grant to Austin Peay and Clarksville High School to continue their grassroots partnership.”
