Why Study English Studies Concentration

Students interested in Literature, Creative Writing, Technical Writing, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, or better understanding the breadth and depth of human expression and literary representation in historical and cultural context.

The English Studies Concentration involves deep study of literature with emphasis in literary criticism, theory, writing, and Cultural Studies. Seminar-style courses allow for sustained investigation and discussion in survey courses and specific topics or authors. Our program focuses on professionalization, or how the skills developed through the study of literature and writing is applicable to many career paths, including and beyond teaching, and simultaneously earn certificates in Creative Writing, Technical Writing, and/or Linguistics. Faculty in our program work very closely with students, often one-on-one, to develop papers for presentation at conferences, critical essays and creative writing for publication, and advanced technical writing skills.
