Programs of Study in English

The Department of Languages and Literature offers offers three undergraduate programs of study, four minors, and one graduate degree path in English. Languages and Literature is the largest department on campus and has the distinct pleasure of teaching each student at Austin Peay State University.

What Do Our Students Learn?

Critical Thinking

Apply logical reasoning to literary texts and/or linguistic structures.
Analyze race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other issues in literature by underrepresented authors.
Analyze the use of language and rhetoric in literature and other forms of public communication.

Oral Communication

Identify and adapt to the rhetorical needs and situation of an audience.
Effectively use appropriate presentation technologies, such as PowerPoint.
Identify and choose the appropriate register for communicating with a given audience.

Written Communication

Identify and adapt to the rhetorical situation of a given writing project.
Compose focused, persuasive documents in clear, grammatical prose.
Read secondary sources from guided or independent research and synthesize the arguments into own writing.
Cite all source materials according to professional standards.

Professionalization

Identify and articulate career or graduate study goals.
Produce and collect documents to incorporate into a portfolio for future career or graduate study.
Apply knowledge of rhetorical situations to compose and adapt job materials for a variety of career or educational paths.

Digital Literacy

Critically curate information using appropriate technologies (archives, databases, and other digital platforms).
Evaluate digital sources, making judgments about quality, relevance, usefulness, and/or accuracy of information.
Interpret, synthesize, and present information using a variety of modalities.
